From time immemorial, to add a more appetizing type of food and drinks, dyes were added, and no one cared for the harm of the dyes. First, the dyes were extracted from natural raw materials - fruits, vegetables, berries, plant roots.
To the natural colorants in the course of evolution, the human body has fully adapted. In its composition, natural dyes contain coloring pigments, organic acids, aromatic substances, vitamins. And, although for many of them the maximum permissible concentration is established, natural dyes are considered safe for human health.
At present, artificial food colorings, which are water-soluble organic compounds that do not exist in nature, have become very popular. They do not have nutritional value, but the harm of dyes for the human body is very possible. Currently used in food industry dyes are marked E100 - E199.
In the food industry of USA, the following dyes are not allowed:
E102, E103, E107, E110, E120, E121, E123, E124, E125, E153, E154, E155, E160a, E160d, E160f, E166, E173, E174, E175, E180, E182. It is forbidden to use dyes in Russia: E121, E123. Especially dangerous are the dyes E 102, E 110, E 122, E 123, E 124, E 127, E 151.
Studies conducted in the UK have shown a negative impact on the health of children of the following food colors: E102, E104, E110, E122, E124, E129. They can cause in children and adults: a small excitability, violation of concentration, sudden mood swings, dysbacteriosis, allergies, hyperactive behavior, children's learning disabilities.
The technology of food production is constantly evolving. Raw materials, and therefore dyes (natural or artificial), passes many stages of technological processing, the result of which is very far from "naturalness".
Recently, in connection with the identification of the negative impact on human food coloring, many countries in the world seek to reduce the harm of dyes by limiting or completely prohibiting their use in the food industry. Simple rules will help consumers to take care of themselves and limit the harmful effect of food colors: when choosing products, pay attention to the labeling and composition, the unnaturally bright color of the drinks gives out the presence of dyes, and try to give the children drinks and products without dyes.
